A federal judge has dismissed a complaint from a group of workers who said they were unfairly discriminated against by Maine’s COVID-19 vaccine requirement for health care personnel. The plaintiffs sued Democratic Gov. Janet Mills and other Maine officials along with a group of health care providers in the state. They argued that the vaccine mandate violated their right to free exercise of religion because it did not provide an exemption for religious beliefs. Jon Levy, the chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine, wrote that the vaccine mandate was rationally based. He dismissed the suit Thursday.

A lawsuit alleging a Mississippi school district discriminated against a Black student and stripped her of an academic award has been dismissed by a panel of federal judges. Olecia James filed a federal lawsuit in 2019 against the Cleveland School District in 2019. She claims officials prevented her from becoming class salutatorian and awarded the honor to a white student instead because they “feared white flight.” A panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals published an opinion Wednesday unanimously affirming a district court decision dismissing her claims. James graduated with a degree from Alcorn State University this past spring and is now a second lieutenant in the U.S. army.
The Arizona Supreme Court says tax cuts or increases enacted by the Legislature can never be blocked by opponents using the state constitution’s referendum power, with the rare exception of a tax that funds a completely new state department. The opinion released Friday explains the court’s April 21 decision reinstating a massive income tax cut enacted by the Republican-controlled Legislature last year and signed by GOP Gov. Doug Ducey. The court reversed a lower court decision that said the tax cuts could be blocked and placed on the ballot for voters to decide because the cuts did not appropriate money.

Former Vice President Mike Pence says he didn’t take any classified information with him when he left office. Pence made the comment during an interview Friday with The Associated Press in Iowa a week and a half after the FBI seized classified and top secret information during a search at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. Asked directly if he retained any classified information upon leaving office, Pence said, “No, not to my knowledge.” The disclosure — which would typically be unremarkable for a former vice president — is notable given that FBI agents took 11 sets of classified records from his former boss’s estate while investigating potential violations of three different federal laws.
PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia’s Art Commission has set Sept. 19 as the date for a public hearing on a controversial proposal to place a statue in the city’s Queen Village section about the suffering imposed on Korean “comfort women” in the year leading up to and including World War II.
The divided U.N. Security Council has failed to reach agreement on whether to extend travel exemptions for 13 Taliban officials now ruling Afghanistan. U.N. diplomats said the current exemptions will now expire at midnight Friday because Russia and China asked for a delay until Monday afternoon to consider a new U.S. proposal. U.N. diplomats said Russia and China want to allow all 13 to continue to travel. The U.S. and Western nations are determined to cut the number to protest the Taliban’s rollback of women’s rights and failure to form an inclusive government as it promised.

SAN DIEGO — Blake Snell’s vehicle was struck by a suspected drunken driver Thursday night on the side of Interstate 5 after a San Diego police officer had stopped Snell for an alleged traffic violation, authorities said.
The Louisiana Bond Commission has again voted to withhold approval of a future $39 million line of credit for a New Orleans power proejct — owing to city leaders’ opposition to enforce the state abortion ban. Thursday's vote was the latest development in a tense political tug-of-war between Republicans in Baton Rouge and Democrats in New Orleans concerning the ban. In July, New Orleans City Council passed a resolution directing police and prosecutors not to use city funds to enforce the ban. State Attorney General Jeff Landry described the opposition as a dereliction of duty and argued that the bond commission should defer funding for the New Orleans project until city officials reverse course.
MIAMI — Lawyers for the OnlyFans model accused of murdering her boyfriend in Miami won’t seek to exhume the slain man’s body.
Officials say a fuel tanker truck traveling in Yellowstone National Park has rolled over and spilled an estimated 4,800 gallons of gasoline. Officials were investigating whether any of the unleaded gas any entered a nearby creek. Park officials say the truck driver lost control in the accident early Friday on Highway 191. The road runs through the western side of the park near the Montana-Wyoming border. No injuries were reported and it not immediately known if any fuel entered Grayling Creek, a small waterway that drains into Hebgen Lake in Montana. One lane of the highway remained closed Friday evening as cleanup efforts were underway
Adam Scott felt he was playing well enough that he should start seeing some better scores at some point. That moment appears to have arrived at just the right time. Scott put together another tidy round in the BMW Championship except for one hole. He shot 69 and has a one-shot lead going into the weekend at Wilmington Country Club. Jordan Spieth and Masters champion Scottie Scheffler were one shot behind, along with Cameron Young and Corey Conners. Scott was No. 77 in the FedEx Cup at the start of the postseason. Now he hopes to get to the Tour Championship.
Prosecutors have filed a third attempted murder charge against a man accused of shooting an eastern Indiana police officer in the head during a traffic stop and search for possible narcotics. The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office filed the new charge against 47-year-old Phillip Matthew Lee of Richmond for shooting at a third officer in the Aug. 10 incident. With the additional charge, a judge Thursday raised Lee’s bond to $1.5 million. Richmond police Officer Seara Burton remains in critical condition at a hospital in Dayton, Ohio. She had been scheduled to get married Friday. Lee, who also was shot, also is being treated at a Dayton hospital. Lee made a court appearance Friday from his hospital bed and entered a plea of not guilty.
Construction is set to begin on a long-awaited national museum that will honor the U.S. Coast Guard. A special keel-laying ceremony, a term that’s usually used to celebrate construction of a cutter, was held on Friday at the museum’s riverfront site in New London, Connecticut. It comes after $50 million was included in the 2022 federal budget for the project, money that U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney, D-Conn., said has “turbo-charged construction” of the 80,000 square foot structure. First proposed in 2001, the museum is expected to open sometime in 2024. The project became delayed over the years, due to funding and other issues.

The Montenegrin government has collapsed in a no-confidence vote that followed a rift over relations with the powerful Serbian Orthodox Church. Lawmakers voted 50-1 early Saturday to oust the government of Prime Minister Dritan Abazovic just weeks after he signed an agreement regulating the position of the Serbian church in Montenegro. The issue is sensitive for many in the small Balkan nation, which which split from its much bigger neighbor Serbia in 2006. The Serbian Orthodox Church enjoys the biggest following in Montenegro but the nation is divided over the church’s dominant role and the country’s ties to Serbia. It isn't not immediately clear whether the fall of the government will lead to snap parliamentary electiona or if the parties will try to form a new govening coalition.
The family of the late actor Bill Paxton has agreed to settle a wrongful death lawsuit against a Los Angeles hospital and the surgeon who performed his heart surgery shortly before he died in 2017. A court filing Friday shows that Paxton's widow and two children have settled the suit with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and a former surgeon there. The terms are confidential. Paxton, who starred in films including “Apollo 13” and “Titanic,” died from a stroke 11 days after heart surgery. His family alleged the surgery was overly risky and unnecessary. The defendants said Paxton and his family knew and understood the risk involved.

Tropical storm warnings have been issued for a stretch of the lower Texas Gulf Coast and part of Mexico's northeast shoreline amid forecasts that an offshore disturbance would become a tropical storm in coming hours. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Friday evening that an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft found maximum sustained winds near 35 mph in the slowly strengthening system. It's in the Gulf some 400 miles south-southeast of the mouth of the Rio Grande river and moving to the northwest. A tropical storm warning is in effect for parts of Mexico as well as the Texas coast from Port Mansfield south to the mouth of the Rio Grande River.
TIJUANA, Mexico — Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador spoke in Tijuana on Friday morning, following a weekend of chaos in the border city that left more than 30 vehicles burned and residents in panic.
Prosecutors in Mexico say they have arrested the attorney general in the previous administration. The arrest Friday was apparently on charges that Jesús Murillo Karam mishandled investigations into the 2014 disappearance of 43 students from a radical teacher college. He was attorney general from 2012 to 2015 under then President Enrique Peña Nieto. The current attorney general has accused Murillo Karam of “orchestrating a massive media trick" in leading a cover-up in the case. Murillo Karam announced in 2014 that the students had been killed and burned at a garbage dump by a drug gang. But the investigation allegedly used torture, improper arrest and mishandling of evidence, allowing most of the suspects to walk free. The motive for the abudction remains unclear eight years later.
Colorado Rockies right-hander Antonio Senzatela will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL in his left knee. Senzatela was hurt during his start Thursday at St. Louis. He and first baseman Elehuris Montero were both racing toward Brendan Donovan’s second-inning grounder when Senzatela broke toward first base in a sudden change of direction. His knee buckled and he fell to the ground, holding his leg in his hands and clearly in pain. Manager Bud Black says Senzatela will have surgery and hopefully be ready to return in six to eight months.

Clarke won the Senior British Open last month at Gleneagles. Singh opened birdie-birdie-eagle. Charles Schwab Cup leader Steven Alker was tied for 39th at 71. Bernhard Langer, the 64-year-old star who the event in 2014, also shot 71. Defending champion Cameron Beckman had a 73.
A federal appeals court has cleared the way for a lawsuit to proceed against guards and officials at a privately run north Louisiana jail where an inmate died with a fractured skull in 2015. The lawsuit includes allegations that guards at Monroe's Richwood Correctional Center sometimes beat and pepper-sprayed handcuffed prisoners in an area without security cameras. A federal judge had thrown out much of the lawsuit but a panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans reinstated it last month. On Friday the appeals court issued an order denying a rehearing, sending the case back to the district court.
