History has been found at the old Gillette Skirt Factory off of Homer Ave. in the City of Cortland. Yesterday, Troy Beckwith Sr. unveiled the location of a time capsule that was discovered inside the first concrete block laid in the construction of the building back in 1904.
The small tin box revealed a glimpse of Cortland history back in the day, the fall of 1904 from articles dated.
“We were dealing with C&S company’s application for SHPO grant funding for the historical credits and they came across some documentation that there was a time capsule buried in the wall.” – Troy Beckwith said to X101.
In the time capsule were photos taken by the Hyatt Studios in Cortland, a City of Cortland book of codes, Ads including one of the Cortland Automobile Company, pencils bearing the Gillette Skirt Factory name, and photos of the company founders.
The items in the capsule did endure water damage over the 100 plus years. They were hidden and planned to be taken to ‘Preserve in the Past,’ a restoration company based in Rochester to be restored.
The building is currently in plans to be fully renovated into a multi-unit apartment by Calabro properties. Federal grants and state grants will aid in the restoration.
“The project is going to be a 27,000 square foot residential apartment house complex consisting of 22 units, one and two bedroom loft style units with two commercial office spaces in it.” Troy stated.
There will also be two houses nearby torn down to create an L-shaped garage with 7 or 8 garage spaces for residents.
The building, which was never registered as a historic building, is currently in the process of gaining recognition as one.
Construction is slated to begin early 2023.
