TEN THINGS ABOUT THE SCIENCE OF TIRES

Below are YouTube’s official number of viewers of MXA, Dirt Bike, SwapMoto, Vital and RacerX for their”First Look”videos of the 2023 YZ450F.

(1) The 2023 KX250 intake valve pitch is reduced from 37mm to 35.5mm, coupled with increased clearance at the valve seats, this helps deliver increased cylinder-filling efficiency and improved combustion for increased peak performance. (2) The 31mm intake valves are 1mm smaller than in 2022, which contributes to cylinder-head/valve-seat reliability . (3) Piston crown was revised to match the new valve size and pitch changes.

(4) The downdraft-style intake duct is straighter, and the upstream injector is repositioned to the underside of the duct to further contribute to increased performance.

(5) The exhaust system features a 100mm longer header pipe for increased low-mid range torque. (6) The magneto rotor has an increased moment of inertia to smooth out the power delivery.

(7) Revised clutch pushrod helps provide lighter clutch operation. (8) Connecting rod big-end bearing crush height was increased for more durability.

(9) The 2023 Kawasaki KX250 has a longer first gear that makes it easier to use in more situations. The second gear ratio was also fine-tuned to offer a smooth transition from first to third gear.

(10) The downstream injector located on the bottom of the intake duct for quick throttle response, while the position and angle the upstream injector matches the airbox design to contribute to top-end performance. (11) Tapered intake funnel contributes to top-end performance.

(12) Intake duct angle optimized for a straighter approach for intake air. (13) The fork valving is changed to deliver firmer compression damping, while the fork spring rate is unchanged, the revised oil height contributes to the firmer feel.

(14) The rear shock also has firmer compression damping.

(15) The new footpeg design is 5mm wider front-to-rear and 3mm rearward, plus the footpegs are now mounted on aluminum instead of steel brackets.

2023 YAMAHA YZ250F: The 250cc four-stroke engine features aggressive cam profiles and a reversed cylinder head layout. The YZ250F’s uses an advanced four-stroke engine best known for its broad, useable powerband and class-leading mid-range torque. The Power Tuner App puts the tunability of the GYTR Power Tuner into your smartphone to make fueling and ignition timing instantly adjustable.

2023 Yamaha YZ250 Two-Stroke: The 249cc liquid-cooled, YPVS-equipped, reed-valve-inducted, two-stroke engine is lightweight, compact and fun, with an incredibly wide, hard-hitting powerband. Aided by the class leading KYB SSS suspension and confidence-inspiring ergonomic design (that includes includes a flatter seat, narrow fuel tank, smoothly integrated body panels and slim radiator shrouds) the 2023 YZ250 two-strokes builds on 18 years of aluminum frame know-how.

2023 Yamaha YZ125 Two-Stroke: Yamaha’s advanced, liquid-cooled 125cc two-stroke engine provides impressive acceleration, thrilling mid- to high-rpm power, along with supreme reliability. The rider friendly aluminum chassis add nimble handling, more control and less rider fatigue to the YZ125 equation. The aggressive bodywork including slim body panels and blacked-out radiator shrouds integrate with a bold graphics scheme to highlight the YZ125 is the perfect choice for riders stepping up from the 85s.

The 1988 Cagiva WMX 250 was designed by Dutch motorcycle designer Jan Witteveen. Witteveen had been at Gilera, Sach and Siminini before moving to Cagiva. It was raced by Pekka Vehkonnen and Gert Jan Van Doorn. Vehkonnen finished second in the 1988 250 World Championship behind Jon van den Berk and ahead of Rodney Smith. However, Cagiva had purchased the Husqvarna brand from its Swedish Electrolux owners during thsi time frame and moved the Swedish brand to Italy, where they eventually rebadged the Cagivas as Husqvarnas.

We were at Glen Helen at the crack of dawn on Tuesday morning to shoot the video and the action photos of the 2023 GasGas MC450F (42), GasGas MC250F (82) and GasGas MC350F (72). We spent the day before in our Valencia offices shooting these three bikes in the photo studio, plus the  2023 GasGas MC125 and Gas Gas MC250 two-strokes. The three MXA test riders (Josh Mosiman, Brian Medeiros and Connor Styers) had a ball riding the bikes. Once the videos and action photos were shot, Josh went logged his fastest lap time possible on all three bikes. Stay tuned for an upcoming video with his comparisons.

Jason Anderson’s 2-2 at Budd’s Creek gave him his second 450 National win of 2022. Budds Creek didn’t offer many passing opportunities as Eli Tomac (1-5) and Chase Sexton (7-1)  can attest to. 2022 450 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS STANDINGS (After 10 of 12 rounds) 1. Last week Jo Shimoda was 14 points out of second place the 250 Championship behind Hunter Lawrence. This week he is 6 points ahead of Hunter Lawrence in the 250 title chase.

Jett Lawrence appears to be content with his 37-point lead and has watched Kawasaki’s Jo Shimoda win Unadilla and R. J. Hampshire win Budds Creek. It is unlikely that Shimoda can make up the points with only two rounds left (Crawfordsville and Pala 2).

Nine-time world champion, Tony Cairoli, was back in the USA to race the Budds Creek National this weekend, but he crashed early in moto one and hurt his wrist. He got up and finished the moto, but was 19th. But, you gotta give Tony credit, he showed up for the second moto and soldiered on to a 15th place finish. Tony said, “The idea was to come here to make some more gate drops before the Motocross desf Nations. I always like this track and after 15 years I want to come back. I just wanted to keep riding because I came all the way here to train at least a little bit. In the second moto, I put some ice on it and I hoped that it would be a little better but unfortunately it wasn’t good. I just rode at 50% of the possibilities and I didn’t want to crash and risk it. Uunfortunately, I have a little crack on my hand and I just need a couple of days of rest and let’s try to regroup and be ready for Motocross of Nations, which will be our next race and our biggest of the year.”

The official results from the Budds Creek 450 National show that GasGas factory rider Justin Barcia went 6-36, but according to MX Sports Justin was disqualified for taking out Dylan Ferrandis on the sixth lap of the second 450 moto. Barcia has been on double-secret probation in Supercross ever since a series of take-out moves, some his fault and some not, during the 2022 AMA Supercross series. But that probation is not in effect in the National outdoor series. After a GoPro video surfaced on Monday, the officials have held off on making an official statement. They may have jumped the gun on the disqualification (and certainly Dylan Ferrandis’s post-race statements about the incident seem to be wholly inaccurate). MX Sports may stick to their guns if additional evidence surfaces, but if not …who knows.

Guillem Farres made the top ten at Budds Creek and will now be staying on for the final two rounds.

When Star Yamaha announced that Guillem Farres would be the fill-in riders for injured Nick Romano for Round 10 of AMA National Motocross Championship at Budds Creek this past Saturday, everyone in the USA said, “Who?” The young Spaniard has scored three top 10 finishes in the FIM 250 World Motocross Championship. He will also compete in the 2022 Motocross des Nations at Red Bud for Team Spain in the 250 class. Farres is filling in for Nick Romano, who was injured while preparing for the Budds Creek and will not be back this series. Star Yamaha us well known for bringing young riders up to the team—often fielding as many as 6 riders at a given race, so Guillem Farres’s home address may be out of their wheelhouse, but he fits the kind of opportunities that Star Yamaha offers young riders.

Although unknown in America, where the fans care little about the FIM World Championships, which is not helped by the management of the MXGP by the Luongo family, and the fact that there were only 24 riders in the 250 class at the French GP this weekend (and only 18 in the race), while Farres had to qualify against 80 AMA 250 riders to make the cut at Budds Creek. Guillem was 10th fastest with a 2:00 lap times (Jett Lawrence’s fast time was 1:56.8). Farres ended the day at Budds Creek with a 6-13 for overall, while Star Yamahaa teammates Justin Cooper was fifth and Nate Tharsher was sixth. His top ten performance earned him spot on the Star Yamaha team for Crawfordsville and Pala.

Amateur star Haiden Deegan will be racing the Budds Creek 250 National this Saturday for Star Yamaha. Every rising star has to face the big guns sooner or later. Haiden chose sooner.

Works Connection’s Elite Axle Block Kit converts your stock KTM / Husqvarna rear axle from a fixed design into a floating type. Our kit retains your stock axle and aluminum axle nut so your ‘leaner’ triangle can still be used. KTM and Husqvarna down sized their rear axles from 25mm to 22mm for the 2023 models, so Works Connection went back to the drawing board and designed an all-new kit. KTM’s and Husqvarna’s Factory race teams use this same floating type design on their race team bikes to improve traction as well as straight line stability and now those same benefits are available from this kit.

Works Connection’s ‘kit’ consists of a pair of CNC-macgined Elite Axle Blocks, a machined Titanium drive-side receiver and a square removal tool nut. The key component is the integrated receiver post on each axle block that allows the use of calipers to precisely measure and match the left and right axle block’s position. This ensures exact alignment of the chain and sprocket so critical to prolonging chain and sprocket life. The retail price of the Elite Axle Block Kit in $99.95 in blue, red, black, orange and silver. It is designed and manufactured in the USA. The 2022 World Vet Motocross Championship is shaping up to be a barn burner, as lots of former motocross stars from different decades are lining up to win the Over-30, Over-40, Over-50, Over-60 and Over-70 titles. Believe it or not, multi-time AMA 250 National Champion Gary Jones is now 70-years-old. He is he only rider to have won World Vet crowns in the Over-30, Over-40, Over-50 and Over-60 classes. If he can win the Over-70 title in 2022, he will have a Grand Slam of most of the important age groups. But Gary won’t be perfect because 1970s GP star Lars Larsson is the reigning Over-80 World Vet Champion and Gary Jones has to wait ten years before he’s old enough to get the clean sweep he wants. 2022 AMA NATIONAL MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP May 28…Pala, CA June 4…Hangtown, CA June 11…Thunder Valley, CO June 18…Mt.
