Score the first round of each team in the 2021 NFL Draft at mid-season-CBSSports.com

Covers the impact of the coronavirus on the sports world

Half a season will not be an NFL player's career, but as a draft analyst, it is natural for me to check rookies halfway through the regular season, right?

Like Justin Jefferson before him, Jamal Chase is full of future superstars on him, and the quarterback was terrible from the start.

Let's score the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft in the middle of their first season as a professional player. These ratings are strictly based on performance. I did not consider the cost of up/down transactions.

Lawrence's performance in seven games is not like a once-in-a-generation prospect. It just doesn't. Of course, the environment in Jacksonville is hardly helpful. And understandably, in the first half of the rookie season, a general draft pick caused him trouble. We have seen it many times before.

However, in September, Lawrence often made clanking layup shots and panicked uncharacteristically in his pocket. By the end of October, he began to look more like Clemson's version of himself, but Lawrence still had a long way to go before meeting his huge expectations.

Mike White's 400-plus yard match with the Bengals might ultimately be a terrible aberration, but it did make Wilson's start look worse.

Every game-before he was injured-did have some high-end pitches, many of which were played during garbage time, but they were offset by wrong decisions in and out of pockets and occasional ball placement issues. In addition to his 297 yard performance in the defeat of the Titans, it was very difficult for Wilson to sled out the gate.

We all know that Lance needs time, more time than the other quarterbacks drafted in the first round of the 2021 draft, and when he was forced to play for the 49ers this season, he looked like an unprepared one. Good passer. Lance's only start against the Cardinals was a series of quick moves, scrambled in the middle and late rockets.

This result may also be "incomplete" because Lance has only tried 48 passes so far.

In order to start his NFL career, the Falcons put training wheels on Pitts. I don't know why. Then, the light bulb turned on. Pitts' average goal depth increased from 8.8 to 14.4 in Weeks 1-4, and the pterodactyl pass catcher was the most effective on the vertical course tree.

In weeks 6 and 7, he played for more than 100 yards in a row, but in the two catches against the Panthers in week 8, he only ran 13 yards, just like the 3,000th game in the Matt Ryan era. The NFC South game is the same. In general, the Falcons have received high-quality returns in the Pitts team.

Of course, for the Bengal tiger, a simple "A". Chase is the leader of the offensive rookie of the year, and his debut season in the NFL was Randy Moss style. After each catch, his average score was 8.0 yards-thanks to the 82 yard scoring against the Ravens, which was the highlight after receiving the ball-and Burrow's passing score was 124.1, which indirectly contributed to Chase pitched the ball in the direction. When Burrow aimed at his former LSU teammate, it equated to him being the best quarterback in the NFL.

As a WR1 in 2021, I am annoyed at the beginning of Waddle's career. He is more talented than his incredible 8.6 yards average per catch. The Dolphins are very conservative, and Vardel barely appears on the football field, which is one of the many places he shines under the bright lights of Tuscaloosa.

Only 7.6% of Waddle's goal is to pitch 20 yards or more in the low court. That was a negligent offensive game plan. What I want to say is that Waddle didn't make defenders make mistakes as frequently as he did in college. He did lead the team to 48 receptions.

For those who are not familiar with unstable games, this is an unstable start for Detroit's Sewell. In the past month, he looked more like a prospect of entering the top 7 of the 2021 draft at the age of 20, and his college resume has only two years of Pac-12 starting experience.

Sewell began to show his opponents his will, and his anxiety and discomfort in pass protection were hardly as severe as he showed in September and early October. In addition, I like his confrontation with Aaron Donald a few weeks ago. Great sign.

Horn recorded only 146 steals in three games at Matt Ruhr's club. He broke his foot in late September and, of course, was placed in IR. He did have an interception-but he did allow a touchdown. A return later this season is not considered completely impossible, but now, it is unfair to score a point against Horne, who the Panthers chose.

Surtain's performance is definitely better than last year's first round corner kick, but that doesn't mean much. Unsurprisingly, Sultan's performance was similar to his performance in Alabama. In the face of larger perimeters, manpower coverage is very wide, some small problems on the court and occasional splash games-he does have a pick and four passes to break into the weekend.

Is Surtain absolutely locked? Do not. Is he responsible? Far.

I don't know how I feel about Smith, because he was like a roller coaster in the first half of the season, and I am not used to Smith's roller coaster. He is as stable as possible in Alabama. During his entire stay with Crimson Tide, he has already lost 3 passes after 10 passes by the Hawks.

And there are some shining points-such as the 122-yard grab against the Chiefs and his NFL debut, in Atlanta's defeat of the Falcons, 8 ball catches, 71 yards, and a single touchdown. But it feels like the physical aspect of the game sometimes does make his learning curve steep, although in most cases his silky smooth movements do produce separation, and they are still fun.

I hope Smith can be more stable, I really did it.

The fields begin to appear. He really is. When I was here-in Week 8 against the 49ers, without Mattnaghi on the sidelines, he looked visibly more comfortable.

But it was not pretty at the beginning. It looks like a red shirt is definitely needed... the season? Yes. Or something close to that. Fields still relies on his supreme athletic talent more than anything else, but this is not the worst thing for a rookie quarterback, because he is understanding the speed and complexity of NFL defense.

I would love to see more vertical shots in the game action. But sometimes the big dramas that we often see at Ohio State University also appear in Chicago, but Fields took extra time to deal with the time he needed to make it rip. He is currently the most dismissed quarterback in football. The 14.1% firing rate is terrible-but not completely unheard of for first-round rookie passers.

Parsons is a different cat. He is a 6-foot-3, 240-pound off-the-ball linebacker-mainly-he was promoted to the role of a winger in the first month of his NFL career, and he was a passer The performance has exceeded his age rush.

This is not to say that Parsons did not show a sharp edge at Penn State University. he made it. But I don't believe he can play the main perimeter rusher role in his rookie season. We all want to see normal side-to-side tackles in linebackers. His game is full of energy, which is great considering his thick body.

Parsons has a way to learn the nuances of reporting, and he hasn't lost blocks as effortlessly as he did in the Big Ten-imagine it-but the Cowboys should be satisfied with their first-round draft at this moment.

Philip Rivers coached high school football in Alabama and watched Slater play a left tackle in the Chargers uniform. He had to say "dagummit."

Slater has always been the best rookie blocker, as he did in 2019, and brought Chase Young a major perimeter problem in the September matchup. The former Northwest star is very athletic and good at offensive tackles. I never thought he had a future in the guard position.

AVT's pass blocking is sub-optimal. Not too bad, just discouraged. However, expensive first-round picks made up for his pass protection problem, and he performed well on the ground and ranked 18th in football outsider games.

Vera-Tucker is a methodical batsman who never rushes to find a job. He is elegant in the space and handles the power of NFL defensive tackles, which is almost always overwhelming for young blockers, okay.

It feels like Jones should be graded midway through his rookie season. His offense is very conservative and spends a lot of money, but he does a good job. Important pitches are few and far apart. When improvisation is not completely absent in a given game, this kind of improvisation has always been awkward, but he showed a keen sense of being able to drive football to the right place.

Jones looks like a passer who can successfully manage the game. Did he show that he could eventually improve the people around him? No, not now. Either way, the Patriots should be satisfied with Jones, especially considering the performance of other first-round players is so bad.

Collins had a bad start to his NFL career. Nothing terrible. nothing special. The strange thing I noticed-where is the representative of the passing sprint? This is the 6-4, 260-pound linebacker we are talking about here. This is the size of the edge impactor! He was very effective in this role in Tulsa.

That part of his game must be strengthened, the Cardinals.

Straightforward-Leatherwood is really hard to get out of the door. He allowed 27 pressures in eight games. not good. The running stability he demonstrated in Alabama is almost invisible. Now, this is the experienced SEC interceptor we are talking about here. I wouldn't be surprised if he had an Andrew Thomas-like performance in the second half of his rookie season.

But so far, Leatherwood seems to be a strange choice for the Raiders, and this draft pick has attracted attention on draft night.

So far, Phillips has a wonderful game on his NFL resume-against the Colts. Although the 17 pressures of 204 pass sprints are equivalent to an incompletely cruel pressure creation rate of 8.4%, the diverse arsenal of pass sprints and complete games he showed in Miami's one-year show are simply legal The one-on-one situation is not as effective as Miami hopes.

With his proven strong edge setting in 2020, running backs who beat blocks rarely appeared on the court early in his NFL career.

Another difficult start for the first-round linebacker. I remember last year, Kenneth Murray, Patrick Quinn and Jordin Brooks were very bad. Davis's slower diagnostic skills, five missed tackles, disturbing reporting representation, and usually ineffective running defense were the keys to Washington's surprisingly poor defensive performance in the first half of 2021.

With his size, his speed, and the splash of his coverage in Kentucky last season, Davis feels like a first-round linebacker, and he is bound to reverse the recent trend of struggling in this position in the first year. Up the momentum. But perhaps it is the one-year miracle phenomenon that has led to a longer adaptation process at the professional level.

Tony initially lacked opportunities in the Giants’ offense, then they listened to him in early October and proved him right in two strong games earlier this month, which included a game with 10 catches for 189 yards. In a victory at Superdome, no one saw the Saints coming.

He has calmed down since then, scoring a total of 52 yards in his last two games, but he has played like Tony at the University of Florida for most of the season. Among all qualified rookies, his average of 7.4 yards per catch is only second behind Chase.

Paye has not been fired in the NFL. So far, he has produced only 8 pressure in 133 healthy quick passes. But the wavering edge impactor made him feel his presence while running. Considering how much pop music he played in college, this is not surprising.

Now, the Colts may hope to get more passing efficiency from Payer, and he is not completely at a loss in this regard. But the positive performance that prevented the game shows that he is strong enough, at least, one of the best defenses in the league is a useful two-legged player.

Man, I sympathize with Farley. Due to Virginia Tech’s injuries, he was considered a dangerous injury proposal by many during the pre-draft process, one of whom was responsible for back problems. But the Titans liked his advantage very much, so they chose him in the first round. After playing only 60 games in the NFL, he tore his ACL and missed this year's game.

The Titans cannot be scored on Farley right now.

Darrisaw had a long way to see the stadium-a groin injury prevented him from playing until Week 5. He is worth waiting for for the Vikings. Believe me. In 183 blocked passes, he only allowed three quarterbacks to put pressure on players like Brian Burns and Randy Gregory, and many of his victories seemed effortless, like They looked the same at Virginia Tech.

Daliso encountered some problems in the super-high-speed perimeter sprint, but he is ready for everything else. Perhaps most importantly, Darison handled those purely power sprint situations, and most rookies have major problems.

The Harrison will not repair the Steelers game. But the 2020 Doak Walker champion is definitely working hard. He leads all rookies with 128 passes, but has averaged only 3.7 yards per pass so far. Most of them are in the average resistance unit in Pittsburgh. There are few gorgeous runs, but only a big and talented ball holder that Harris can do.

In passing games, he was a godsend to Ben Roethlisberger, he had 37 catches, 273 yards and two points. However, the rock behind this iteration of Pittsburgh's offensive line is not exactly the same as what has been done in Alabama over the past four years.

Etienne lost the year in the summer. We have to wait until next season to reunite him and Lawrence on the football field again.

When Newsom landed in the first round, everyone finally saw the videotape of the Northwest Territories and saw how natural his athleticism was and how aggressive he played in the air. He has always been a rare first-round rookie cornerback. He intervened in the first half of his rookie season and confidently provided high-quality coverage on the court.

To date, he has four pass breakthroughs and looks like a young defensive guard on the rise.

Injuries kept Bateman until Week 6, and the early return was encouraging, which was big news for Lamar Jackson and the Ravens' passing offense. Before meeting in Baltimore in Week 8, Bateman demonstrated his deceptive on-court stretch skills for 80 yards in three games against the Bengals.

During this period of Bateman's rookie season, his "incomplete" results may fluctuate greatly, and he will surely become the core part of Baltimore's attempt to achieve through the air.

Probably the most surprising first-round pick in April, the oversized edge rusher played a limited rotation role on the Saints' defensive front. So far, he has only 9 quarterback pressure in 103 passes and sprints, but at 6-6 pounds and 270 pounds, Turner has the greatest impact on running, which shouldn’t be surprising because he has always been An immovable object.

I also like the way the Saints use him up and down in the melee.

Stokes fluctuated up and down for the Packers, with five pass breakthroughs, but allowed two touchdowns within his coverage. Athletic ability is evident in most outings. Stokes can occasionally be a bit too aggressive-this is a problem in Georgia-but it is a good start for the first round of corner kicks that entered a full-time role at the beginning of his NFL career, although Not compelling.

As my “buyer beware” prospect for the 2021 class, I think this prospect most needs a red shirt season. Bill received a bonus from Rousseau in the first half of the season that was better than I expected. His two best games were against the Dolphins' porous offensive line, but he also had some brilliant performances in games against other teams, and he showed his skills well when intercepting Patrick Mahoms’ screens. Height and athletic ability.

However, Rousseau was often moved in running games and discounted in the Dolphins game, with only three quarterbacks under pressure in 93 passing sprints.

Oweh was fired early in his career—because he didn't register one in his last season at Penn State—so the monkey left his back early. That's huge. Of his 24 pressures, a large part was entirely designed for him, but this is the way to pass the ball quickly in Baltimore under the leadership of Wink Martindale.

Oweh's massive explosive tendency is already obvious, but he sometimes gets stiff in the corners. In general, the Ravens must be satisfied with Oweh's defense.

It is difficult for any team in Tampa Bay to get playing time, and Trian has played 222 fast breaks in eight games. He recorded 13 pressures in 129 passing sprints-not terrible, not very good-and many times he was used by inside defensive strikers. Against running, Tryon often betrayed completely to get into the field because he has let himself out of the game running in his direction.

It's too early, but it's hard to really feel Tryon's game.
