The Turkish authorities’ comprehensive efforts to transform Istanbul into a United Nations hub in line with Turkey’s commercial and humanitarian foreign policy are bearing fruit.

The United Nations will move part of its headquarters from Geneva to Istanbul and open an Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in this metropolis to support field operations around the world.

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the Turkish Parliament accepted the proposal of an agreement between Turkey and the United Nations on the establishment of an OCHA in Istanbul.

Through this initiative, the United Nations will manage and support humanitarian crises around the world in Istanbul, especially the humanitarian crises in the Middle East.

The office will also provide services in the areas of planning, monitoring, humanitarian assistance coordination, and financial transaction tracking on a global and regional scale.

Deputy Foreign Minister Yavuz Selim Kıran spoke to Milliyet every day, saying that the arrival of the OCHA in Istanbul would be an important step in transforming Istanbul into a United Nations center.

"This will also strengthen our relationship with OCHA and the United Nations," he said.

Currently, nine United Nations agencies are operating in Istanbul, and eight other important United Nations agencies are working hard to open offices in Istanbul, as well as the OCHA, which has two regional branches in the capital Ankara and southern Gaziantep Province.
